Tumble Dryer Availability Changes 03/06/2026
From January 2027 only Heat Pump Tumble Dryers will be available to purchase from the manufacturers. This means that once our stock is used up after that time, we will only be able to supply Heat Pump Dryers for new product rentals. We will still be able to supply refurbished traditional dryers, such as condenser and vented dryers.
Why Condenser and Vented Dryers are being phased out
The government is introducing new regulations to phase out the sale of inefficient vented and condenser tumble dryers. The change is driven primarily by updated Ecodesign rules, which allow the government to set minimum energy performance standards for household appliances.
The government’s key objectives are as follows:
- Reduce household energy consumption
- Lower electricity bills for consumers
- Cut carbon emissions to support net-zero targets
Traditional vented and most condenser dryers use large amounts of electricity because they heat fresh air continuously and then expel it. By contrast, newer technologies such as heat pump dryers use energy far more efficiently. As a result, the government has chosen to raise minimum efficiency standards to a level that effectively removes the least efficient models from the market.
This is not a ban on owning or using existing appliances. Instead, it is a market change affecting new products, designed to encourage manufacturers and consumers to move toward more efficient technology.
When the change will take place
The reform is already underway and follows a clear timeline:
- 19 March 2026: New regulations were formally introduced.
- 10 April 2026: Regulations came into force, starting a transition period.
- 19 January 2027: Full implementation — new vented and condenser tumble dryers can no longer be sold in Great Britain.
From that date onward, only tumble dryers meeting the new minimum energy performance standards, effectively heat pump dryers, will be available for sale.
